The 34-year-old was given a rousing reception by supporters in his 709th game for the Reds, which ended in a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace.

Some tickets for the match, a routine end of season encounter between Liverpool and Palace were rumored to be $19,000, such is the affection with which former England captain Gerrard is held for his one-club loyalty.

Liverpool supporters arrived at Anfield hours before the game against Palace to pay tribute to the former England midfielder, who was given a guard of honor by both teams on his way to the pitch before kick-off.

Though the result did not match the sense of anticipation in the ground, the Liverpool fans roared its approval as Gerrard addressed the crowd after the game while his team-mates looked on, all wearing shirts with the name Gerrard and the number eight on the back.

Addressing the crowd, Gerrard admitted he had been dreading the moment and said he was "devastated" at the thought he would not being playing in front of the Liverpool fans again.

Gerrard will play his final game for his hometown club away at Stoke next weekend, before leaving to play for LA Galaxy in the United States in the summer.
