Sheikh Mohammed announces major revamp for heart of Dubai
Plans for a huge new development in the middle of Dubai have been revealed by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Sheikh Mohammad, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said the Jumeirah Central project will be a “mini-city”.
The 47 million sqft development will be located off Sheikh Zayed Road, in the shadow of the Burj Al Arab. It will include homes for 35,000 people, hotels, 33 parks and open spaces, three malls and a transport network featuring cycle paths and a cable car system.
Sheikh Mohammed tweeted on Saturday that the project represents “Dubai’s vision for future cities”.
Sheikh Mohammed added: “The city is designed to be self-sufficient and will include various facilities such as hospitals, schools, offices, accommodations, gardens, police stations, malls and integrated community facilities.”
It is thought Jumeirah Central may be built on the area that would have been used for Mall of the World after it was announced last week that the mall project was being moved to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
In a statement, Dubai Media Officer later said that the development will have a “multi-modal transport network, environmentally-friendly transport options and aerial gondolas”.
The statement quoted Sheikh Mohammed as saying: “Jumeirah Central is a clear milestone in our journey towards building the city of the future and the creation of engaged and happy communities.
“We will not stop investing in our economy, and these projects are tools to expedite that journey of growth. We are confident in the strength of our economy and are optimistic for the future of our nation. To that end, our vision will continuously evolve and expand.”
The media office said the district will be located on Sheikh Zayed Road with 25 points of vehicular access. The district will feature 9 million sqft of retail space, including three malls, as well as outdoor shopping space and 44,000 car parking spaces.
Jumeirah Central will also have 7,200 hotel rooms, the largest number of rooms in one district.
Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Chairman of Dubai Holding, said: “Jumeirah Central is a result of extensive research into future urban development and the creation of more cohesive societies.”
