Kiwis thrashes Lankan Lions in the opener
After winning the toss New Zealand put up a huge total of 331 with skipper Brendon McCullum giving a great start after scoring 65 of 49 balls.
Corey Anderson came lower down the order and blasted a quick 75 runs in 46 balls with 8 boundaries and 2 sixes, taking the team to a winning total of 331.
Sri Lanka in reply started off well with Thirimanne keeping the hopes alive, until he scored 65. His dismissal triggered a breakdown in the fall of wickets with Jayawardene out on a duck and Sangakkara dismissed in successive overs.
Sri Lanka kept struggling to reach their target with skipper Angelo displaying some fight scoring 46, but the defeat looked inevitable and the Kiwis at home looked too good for the Lankans.
