Kylian Mbappe overcame a missed penalty to deliver a match winning performance as France defeated Morocco 2 0 in the World Cup 2026 quarter final in Boston to secure their place in the semi finals.

The France captain had an early opportunity to put his team ahead after winning a penalty in the first half, but his spot kick was comfortably saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

However, Mbappe quickly recovered from the setback and broke the deadlock in the 60th minute with a brilliant finish into the far corner. He then turned provider, setting up Ousmane Dembele, whose strike doubled France’s advantage in the 66th minute.

Morocco struggled to create attacking opportunities, especially with the absence of injured midfielder Ismael Saibari, and their impressive World Cup campaign ended at the quarter final stage.

Mbappe has now taken his tournament tally to eight goals and three assists, putting him firmly in contention for both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards.

France controlled much of the match, with chances falling to Dayot Upamecano and Desire Doue, while Lucas Digne also came close after hitting the crossbar with a long range effort.

Despite appearing to pick up a minor ankle issue late in the match, Mbappe confirmed he was fine and said he was substituted because another player was better prepared to finish the game.

France will now face either Spain or Belgium in the World Cup semi finals as Didier Deschamps’ side continue their pursuit of a third consecutive World Cup final appearance.

Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi praised his team’s journey, saying their future remains bright despite the disappointment of elimination.
