Main Vaapas Aaunga Review
BY SAIAM HASAN
These days, it feels like every other movie is full of angry "alpha males," loud fights, and tons of blood. That is why Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga feels like such a breath of fresh air. It stands completely apart. While so many films choose anger and division, this one chooses gentleness, love, and real human emotion.
For me, this wasn’t just another movie about Partition. It is a story about the deep ache of missing home, missing the people left behind, and longing for a past that you can never return to. It beautifully shows how memories travel from parents to children, and then to grandchildren. It reminds us that while pain can be passed down through generations, love and hope can travel the very same way.
The story follows an old man in Punjab Ishar Singh Grewal played by Naseeruddin Shah who is struggling with dementia. Slowly, his mind starts to bring back broken pieces of his youth in what is now Pakistan. His memories aren't perfect or clear, but they are incredibly emotional. Through his eyes, we see a love story that never got to finish, a home that was lost forever, and a life cut in half by a border. The movie really captures how Partition didn’t just divide land, it tore families apart and left people waiting for loved ones who would never return. That endless, painful waiting is the real heart of the film.
The acting is incredibly real and grounded. Diljit Dosanjh plays Nirvair Grewal his role with so much honesty and simplicity. Sharvari Wagh and Vedang Raina both feel completely natural on screen. Then there is Naseeruddin Shah. He delivers such a powerful performance, we are truly lucky to be living in the times of a phenomenal artist like Naseeruddin Shah. Vinod Nagpal also brings a quiet, lovely strength to the story. Imtiaz Ali directs the whole film with a sense of calm, focusing on real feelings rather than fake drama.
What I loved most is how the movie treats memory. It doesn’t pretend memories are perfect. It shows them as they really are: broken pieces and half-truths. But even when the specific details are forgotten, the emotion stays behind. There are also sweet, warm moments mixed in that feel just like the stories your grandparents used to tell you.
It isn't perfect, of course. Sometimes the dialogue feels a little too poetic and polished, which takes away from the raw feeling of the scene. But the emotional core stays strong from start to finish. It reminds us that history isn't just about facts; it’s about understanding people. When old stories are told badly, they can cause hate. But when they are told with honesty, they create empathy.
Managing programming for 89.1 Radio 4 as Assistant Programming Director means I’m constantly surrounded by noise, high energy, and content that often tries too hard to be loud. Maybe that’s exactly why this movie hit me differently. It left me with something deeply personal and lived-in. It didn’t feel like a made-up story, it felt real.
It doesn't try to force you to cry or overwhelm you with loud music. It simply holds up a mirror to the memories we already carry inside us, letting them come to the surface gently.
In the end, Main Vaapas Aaunga is about longing, for home, for people, and for a past we can never get back. But it also shows us that simply remembering can be a beautiful way to heal.
