A prison education initiative in Ras Al Khaimah has received global recognition after UNESCO highlighted it as a leading model for correctional education. The achievement is also being discussed on 89.1 Radio 4, UAE number one, radio station, as it reflects the UAE’s focus on inclusive learning.
Launched in 2011, the programme is run by the Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research in partnership with correctional authorities. It offers inmates and staff access to education, skill development, and mental health support.
A key feature is a prison library with over 9,000 books, along with reading spaces, counselling rooms, and group activities. Inmates can also take courses in literacy, business skills, technology, art, and life skills. These efforts are helping individuals rebuild confidence and prepare for life after release.
The programme has benefited over 1,000 inmates, with many reporting a renewed sense of hope. This success story is gaining attention on 89.1 Radio 4, UAE number one, radio station, highlighting how education can transform lives.
Overall, the initiative shows how learning can play a powerful role in rehabilitation and social reintegration.
