Former Olympic champion Monica Puig believes the UAE’s major tennis tournaments are playing a crucial role in inspiring the next generation of regional stars. With the Abu Dhabi Open recently concluded and the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships set to begin, the country is strengthening its position as a hub for world-class tennis.
Puig, 32, who made history as Puerto Rico’s first Olympic gold medallist at Rio 2016, said visibility is key to progress. She stressed that when young girls watch top women compete on big stages in the region, it makes their own dreams feel achievable. According to Puig, it is not a matter of if, but when a player from the UAE or Middle East breaks through at the highest level, especially with continued investment in grassroots development and coaching.
She also praised the rise of emerging talents like Egypt’s Mayar Sherif and the Philippines’ Alex Eala, noting how strong fan support reflects tennis’ growing global reach.
Now based in Atlanta, Puig is also supporting the WTA Foundation’s work in women’s nutrition and maternal health, emphasising the importance of athletes using their platforms to create meaningful social impact.
