India is pushing to host the 2036 Olympic Games as part of its ambition to become a global sporting superpower. The International Olympic Committee has confirmed India is among seven countries interested in hosting the Games, alongside Germany, Qatar, Hungary, Turkey, South Africa and South Korea.

Indian Olympic Association CEO Raghuram Iyer said the bid is about more than hosting a single event. India hopes to enter the world’s top five or ten sporting nations and make sports part of everyday life, improving public health, fitness and mental wellbeing.

However, India faces several challenges, including limited experience hosting major multi sport events, governance concerns, doping issues and a relatively low Olympic medal tally. The country has won 41 Olympic medals since 1900, including seven at Tokyo 2020 and six at Paris 2024.

India has hosted dozens of international sporting events across 15 cities since last year and aims to host 65 events by 2028. Ahmedabad is central to its plans and is expected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

The candidate countries will undergo detailed assessments, with a shortlist expected in late 2028. The final host is due to be elected in 2029.
