Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated India’s athletes after the country finished its Asian Games 2026 campaign with 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. India finished fourth in the overall medal standings at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, recording the country’s second-highest medal tally in Asian Games history.
Modi praised the Indian contingent for competing with determination, passion and sporting spirit. He also expressed hope that the athletes’ success would inspire greater achievements and help strengthen sports at the grassroots level across the country.
India enjoyed several memorable performances during the Games. The men’s and women’s cricket teams successfully defended their Asian Games titles, while both men’s and women’s kabaddi teams won gold. The men’s hockey team retained its title with a 5-1 victory over Malaysia.
The women’s hockey team also ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold by defeating hosts China 1-0.
Athletics contributed 24 medals, while shooting won 15. Archery was India’s most successful discipline for gold medals, producing five champions.
