Seventeen-year-old Hussein Shawky has become the first swimmer to win a gold medal for the UAE at the Asian Youth Games, taking the top spot in the 50m butterfly. His win not only brought home the country’s first-ever swimming gold in the event, but also set a new Games record. A Year 13 student at GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail, Shawky balances rigorous training — eight pool sessions and three gym workouts per week — with his studies. He credits his grandfather’s discipline for his success and aims for a medal at the 2028 Olympic Games.
