Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has suggested major reforms to the Indian Premier League (IPL) to bring back balance between bat and ball, including scrapping the impact player rule and revising powerplay and bowling restrictions.
Speaking at an ESPNcricinfo event ahead of the IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad, Tendulkar said the current system heavily favours batters. He specifically called for the removal of the “impact player” rule, introduced in 2023, arguing it allows teams to strengthen batting line-ups unfairly and increases scoring dominance.
He also proposed splitting the six-over powerplay into two phases: a four-over batter-friendly phase followed by a two-over “bowlers’ powerplay” that captains can choose strategically, with an extra fielder allowed outside the circle.
Additionally, he suggested allowing one bowler to deliver up to five overs in an innings, saying it would give teams’ best bowlers a greater impact.
Tendulkar believes these changes would restore competitiveness in T20 cricket and improve balance in the IPL.
