Iran produced a resilient comeback to draw 2-2 against New Zealand in a dramatic World Cup Group G clash in Los Angeles, with Mohammad Mohebbi scoring a late equaliser to secure a point in a match that kept all four teams in the group level on one point.
New Zealand struck first through Elijah Just in the 7th minute after a strong assist from Chris Wood, but Iran responded through Ramin Rezaeian to level the score. Just restored New Zealand’s lead early in the second half, combining again with Wood to finish a flowing move.
Iran refused to back down and equalised once more in the 64th minute when Mohebbi powered a header off the post from a Rezaeian cross. Both sides created chances in a tense final phase, but neither could find a winner.
The result keeps Group G wide open after Belgium and Egypt also drew their opener, leaving all four teams level on a single point. Elijah Just’s brace made history for New Zealand, while Chris Wood’s physical presence and assists stood out.
Despite political tensions and a hostile build-up in the stadium, both teams delivered an intense, high-quality contest that underlined the unpredictability of the tournament.
