Lionel Messi delivered a dazzling performance as Argentina opened their World Cup campaign with a commanding win over Algeria in Kansas City, scoring a hat-trick to equal the all-time World Cup scoring record of 16 goals.

In front of a heavily Argentine-supported crowd, Messi led from the front in his 200th international appearance, producing a masterclass that underlined his enduring influence on the biggest stage.

He opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a powerful strike from distance after being set up by Rodrigo De Paul. His second came in the 60th minute, finishing calmly after a rebound fell kindly to him inside the box. The hat-trick was completed in the 76th minute with a composed finish threaded through defenders.

Argentina dominated large spells of the match, controlling possession and restricting Algeria’s attacking threat despite a few promising moments from the North African side. The defensive stability, combined with clinical finishing, ensured a comfortable victory.

The result places Argentina in a strong position early in the group stage, while Messi’s performance adds another milestone to his legendary World Cup career, including becoming the first male player to feature in six editions of the tournament.
