Thierry Henry didn’t hold back in his analysis after Portugal were held to a disappointing 1–1 draw against DR Congo in their World Cup opener, with Cristiano Ronaldo at the centre of his criticism.
Speaking as a TV pundit, the former France striker highlighted a key second-half moment where Ronaldo made a run into the box and ended up disrupting a passing move involving Bruno Fernandes. According to Henry, the move reflected a mindset issue, where the focus was more on Ronaldo scoring rather than Portugal building the best attacking opportunity.
“The team needs to score, not you need to score,” Henry said, underlining his belief that Ronaldo should have prioritised team play in that situation.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain, playing in a record sixth World Cup, remains the nation’s all-time top scorer with 143 international goals. However, Henry suggested that in tight matches like this, collective decision-making is more important than individual finishing instincts.
Portugal now turn their attention to their next group match against Uzbekistan on June 23. Reports suggest manager Roberto Martínez may consider tactical changes, including potentially starting Ronaldo on the bench to add more fluidity to the attack after a flat opening performance.
