Director Rajkumar Hirani has offered fresh insight into the much-awaited sequel of 3 Idiots, revealing that the story will pick up 15–20 years after the events of the original film and explore the characters as they navigate mid-life challenges.
Speaking about the script in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Hirani said he and longtime collaborator Abhijat Joshi are still developing the project.
“I’m still working on that script. There is a lot of work left. It’s primarily about what happens to these characters 15-20 years later. It’s not about college or anything. They are married and have children now. They are experiencing mid-life crisis, and so we will have to see what next,” he said.
The original film ended with Rancho (Aamir Khan) living as an innovative educator in Ladakh, Farhan (R Madhavan) becoming a wildlife photographer, and Raju (Sharman Joshi) finding stability in life. The sequel is expected to revisit their journeys years later, shifting focus from college life to adulthood and personal struggles.
Hirani also confirmed that the sequel will carry a strong message, saying with a smile, “Of course. A big one!”
Earlier, Aamir Khan had also confirmed the sequel, stating that he had heard the narration and found the story engaging, while adding that more work is still needed on the script.
The original 3 Idiots (2009) remains one of Indian cinema’s biggest blockbusters, celebrated for its satire on the education system and its iconic message “All is well.”
