Actor Manoj Bajpayee has opened up about why he continues to choose independent and performance-driven films over comfortable big-budget commercial projects, saying hard work and creative challenges are deeply rooted in his personality.
Speaking in a recent interview, Bajpayee admitted that while mainstream films can sometimes feel like a “picnic” because of their scale and comfort, he finds greater satisfaction in cinema that pushes him creatively.
“Mehnat karna mere DNA mein hai,” the actor said, explaining that he enjoys taking on roles that surprise even people close to him.
According to Bajpayee, the thrill comes from doing characters so different that audiences are left wondering if it is really him on screen. “It’s a kick,” he shared, adding that this is why he gravitates toward independent and middle-of-the-road cinema.
The actor also humorously described the appeal of big-budget productions, saying such films often offer comfort, luxury vans, and a less stressful environment. However, he stressed that regardless of the project, he never avoids hard work once the camera starts rolling.
Bajpayee admitted that years of intense performances have started feeling physically and emotionally exhausting with age, but the creative satisfaction still keeps him motivated.
The actor is currently receiving praise for his performance in Governor, an independent film based on former RBI Governor S. Venkitaramanan and India’s financial crisis of the early 1990s.
