Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup was the last of his legendary career after Portugal’s heartbreaking Round of 16 exit to Spain.
Portugal’s World Cup journey ended with a 1-0 defeat to Spain, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Mikel Merino. The loss marked the end of Ronaldo’s dream of lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy, the only major title missing from his remarkable career.
Speaking after the match, the 41-year-old admitted that he will not feature in another World Cup but stopped short of announcing his retirement from international football.
"I'm sad to be leaving the World Cup like this. I gave it my all. It was my last World Cup, yes, but I'll take time to reflect. I won't make any rash decisions," Ronaldo said.
The Portuguese captain added that he would spend time with his family before deciding whether to continue representing Portugal. Ronaldo has enjoyed an extraordinary international career spanning more than two decades, helping Portugal win UEFA Euro 2016 and the UEFA Nations League.
Meanwhile, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez also confirmed his departure following the team's elimination. He praised Ronaldo's leadership, describing him as an exemplary captain whose commitment and influence extended far beyond his goals and assists.
With the next UEFA European Championship scheduled for 2028, Ronaldo will be 43 years old, leaving uncertainty over whether he will continue playing international football.
