FIFA has opened a disciplinary investigation into violent scenes involving Argentina players after their 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain.
The investigation follows a post-match brawl at the stadium, where several Argentina players were involved in clashes with Spain’s squad. Leandro Paredes was shown a red card after the final whistle following an altercation involving Spain players, while Nahuel Molina was also accused of striking Spain captain Rodri during the chaos.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has appointed a prosecutor to examine possible breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. Players involved could face suspensions or other penalties depending on the findings.
FIFA is also investigating Argentina’s celebrations after their semi-final victory over England, where players displayed a banner referencing the Falkland Islands dispute. Political statements or messages are prohibited under FIFA rules, and those involved could face sanctions.
The investigation comes after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
