Filmmaker Karan Johar marked Guru Purnima with an emotional tribute to two people he credits for shaping his journey in cinema — Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra.
Sharing memories from the early days of his career, Karan revealed how two conversations with the Bollywood icons changed his life and gave him the confidence to pursue filmmaking.
Recalling his first interaction with Aditya Chopra, Karan said it was Aditya who recognised his potential and encouraged him to assist on the iconic film ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ when he was planning to leave India for further studies.
According to Karan, Aditya told him that filmmaking was his true calling and that leaving cinema would be a “huge mistake”. The advice pushed him to take his first step towards becoming a director.
Karan also shared a special memory with Shah Rukh Khan from Switzerland, where the superstar told him, “Tu director banega and teri pehli film main karoonga.”
At the time, Karan admitted he wondered if Shah Rukh was joking, but the actor stood by his words and later supported him when he made his directorial debut ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’.
Expressing his gratitude, Karan wrote that he is where he is today because of the belief and support of both Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan.
He said their trust helped him overcome his doubts and gave him the courage to tell stories.
Karan also acknowledged all mentors who support and create opportunities for others, calling them the true spirit of Guru Purnima.
On the professional front, Karan Johar is preparing to return as the host of ‘The Traitors Season 2’.
