Philippines’ tennis sensation Alexandra Eala has created history by becoming the first player from the country to win a WTA Tour-level singles title.
The 21-year-old defeated top seed Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the rain-delayed DC Open final, completing a stunning comeback after losing the opening set.
Eala dominated after the restart, winning 10 of the 13 games played and sealing the biggest victory of her career with powerful serving and aggressive baseline play.
“This is my first chance at a title, and I know it won’t be the last,” Eala said after the win.
The victory continues her incredible run against top-ranked opponents, having now won five straight matches against top-10 players, including victories over stars like Iga Świątek, Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina.
The historic triumph will also take Eala to a career-high World No. 20 in the upcoming WTA rankings.
Meanwhile, in the men’s final, American Taylor Fritz won his first title of the season after defeating 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar 7-6, 6-4. The win gives Fritz momentum ahead of the Canadian Open and the upcoming US Open.
