Former India batter VVS Laxman has emerged as a leading contender to become Team India's chief selector, amid reports that the BCCI is reviewing Ajit Agarkar's tenure, which expires in September 2026.

According to reports, the matter is expected to be discussed at the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September, where the board will decide whether to extend Agarkar's term or appoint a new chief selector.

The review reportedly follows events during India's recent tour of England, including discussions surrounding Rohit Sharma's ODI future, which are said to have prompted senior BCCI officials to reassess the selection committee's leadership.

Despite the speculation, no final decision has been made. Agarkar could still receive an extension, with India's upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka expected to play a role in the board's evaluation.

Since taking charge in 2023, Agarkar has overseen one of India's most successful periods, with the team winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy, and 2026 T20 World Cup.

Meanwhile, VVS Laxman recently served as India's head coach for the Zimbabwe tour, allowing the senior coaching staff a short break after the England series.
