Dubai To Transform 40 Road Tunnels Into Public Art Spaces Under New Urban Initiative

Dubai is set to turn everyday infrastructure into a citywide cultural experience as the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and the Roads and Transport Authority open applications for artists to redesign more than 40 road tunnels across the emirate.

The project, part of the wider Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, aims to transform tunnel walls into permanent public art installations, reimagining daily commutes as immersive cultural journeys. Instead of plain concrete passages, the tunnels will become vibrant creative spaces reflecting Dubai’s identity, diversity, and modern vision.

Emirati and UAE based artists, designers, and architects are invited to submit proposals that include original artwork concepts, colour designs, and implementation plans. Authorities have emphasised that submissions must be bold, simple in composition, and suitable for high speed viewing, with a strong focus on durability due to Dubai’s climate conditions.

A preference has also been given to ceramic based materials for long lasting visual impact, ensuring the artworks remain vibrant over time despite heat and environmental exposure.

The initiative supports Dubai’s broader goal of integrating culture into everyday urban life across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain, reinforcing the UAE’s growing identity as a hub for public art and creative innovation.

Applications are open until 15 June 2026, giving artists a limited window to contribute to one of the largest public art transformations in the region.
