Lionel Messi created history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after becoming the highest goalscorer in World Cup history during Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria.
Messi scored a brace to take his tally to 18 World Cup goals, surpassing Germany legend Miroslav Klose and Brazilian icon Marta in the all-time FIFA scoring charts.
The Argentine captain also became only the third player in World Cup history to score in six consecutive matches and continued his incredible run with goal contributions in eight of his last nine World Cup appearances.
At 38 years old, Messi is also among the oldest players ever to score at the tournament and has now scored against 42 different international teams in his career.
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé continued his sensational World Cup form as France defeated Iraq 3-0 to qualify for the knockout stages.
Mbappé scored twice to move to 16 career World Cup goals, equalling Miroslav Klose for the second-highest men’s tally in tournament history behind Messi. The French superstar also reached 100 international appearances for France, becoming the youngest French player ever to achieve the milestone.
France winger Michael Olise impressed with two assists, while Ousmane Dembélé scored his first-ever goal in a major international tournament.
Elsewhere, Erling Haaland helped Norway secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over Senegal. Haaland now holds Norway’s World Cup scoring record with four goals and has scored in 12 consecutive competitive matches for his national side.
