India seized control of the one off Test against Afghanistan on the opening day as centuries from KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill powered the hosts to a commanding 368 for 3 at stumps in New Chandigarh.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, India faced some early challenges as players adjusted from the fast paced Indian Premier League format back to Test cricket. KL Rahul received an early lifeline when Afghanistan missed a review opportunity, and the experienced batter made the most of it.
Rahul stitched together a crucial 139 run partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who impressed with a well made 81. Following Sudharsan’s dismissal, Rahul continued to anchor the innings and brought up his third consecutive Test century before departing for exactly 100.
Captain Shubman Gill then took charge, building momentum alongside Rishabh Pant. Gill remained unbeaten on 103 at the close of play, registering the 11th Test century of his career, while Pant provided valuable support with a half century.
Afghanistan’s bowlers struggled to contain the Indian batting lineup despite picking up three wickets. Mohammad Saleem was among the standout performers with two dismissals.
The strong start gives India an excellent opportunity to push for a substantial first innings total and gain confidence ahead of important Test assignments later this year against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
