UAE swimmer Hussein Shawky has created history by becoming the first swimmer from the country to win a medal at the Asian Age Group Swimming Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
The 17-year-old from Abu Dhabi Aquatics Club delivered a remarkable performance, winning the gold medal in the 50m freestyle with a time of 22.59 seconds. He followed it up with a silver medal in the 50m butterfly, finishing in 24.50 seconds.
The historic double medal achievement marks another major milestone in Shawky’s growing career and highlights the progress of UAE swimming talent on the international stage.
Shawky has been part of the programmes of the UAE Committee for Talent and Sports Support (UAETSS) under the Ministry of Sports since November 2025. The initiative focuses on identifying promising Emirati athletes and providing them with specialised training, development support and preparation for major international competitions.
Sheikh Suhail Bin Butti Al Maktoum, Assistant Undersecretary for the Sports Development and Competitiveness Sector at the Ministry of Sports and Chairman of UAETSS, praised Shawky’s achievement, saying it reflects the athlete’s dedication and the UAE’s commitment to developing young sporting talent.
The UAE Aquatics Federation also described the achievement as a landmark moment for Emirati swimming, crediting the success to coordinated development programmes involving the federation, clubs, the Ministry of Sports and UAETSS.
Abu Dhabi Aquatics Club said Shawky’s performance reflects the strength of its athlete development system and its efforts to build a new generation of UAE champions capable of competing at the highest levels.
Shawky has already established himself as one of Asia’s promising young swimmers. His previous achievements include winning gold in the 50m event at the Asian Youth Games Bahrain 2025, where he recorded the fastest time in the history of the competition, along with a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle.
