The UAE has introduced new limits on sodium, sugar and fat in selected packaged food products as part of a nationwide effort to promote healthier eating and reduce obesity and other lifestyle related diseases.
The rules cover locally made and imported products, including bread, sweetened milk drinks, flavoured yoghurt and laban, salty snacks and processed cheese. The limits will be reduced in phases, with all targeted products required to meet the final standards by December 31, 2030.
For example, the sodium limit for leavened bread will eventually drop from 444mg to 370mg per 100g, while the sugar limit for sweetened milk drinks will fall from 9.6g to 8g.
Businesses handling the first group of products will have nine months to meet the initial limits, while processed cheese businesses will get up to two years and three months.
Companies that fail to comply could face warnings or fines ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh500,000. Authorities may also close businesses for up to six months or cancel their licence.
Products made specifically for export are exempt unless they are sold within the UAE.
